MEET THE MAGIC OF HISTORICAL HOUSES

If you pass the Hisarönü Village and go 5 km further through the pines, you will see a "dream-village". The name of this place is Kayaköy. Consisting of hundreds of houses lined up on the hillside in a way that did not block the way of each other, this village was an old Greek settlement. Since the Anatolian Greeks were good agriculturalists, they would not build houses on the land that was cultivated. Houses were built in the surrounding rocky and stony areas. Kayaköy was established in accordance with this understanding. Until 1922, 25 thousand people lived in the village. During the "Exchange" that took place after the War of Independence, the inhabitants of the village immigrated to Greece. It is known that a Christian community has lived in the village since the 13th century. Immigrants from Western Thrace were settled here, too. Houses were built on the plain in front of Kayaköy. Now there is a resident population of several thousand people on the plain.

The old houses were completely protected. The village, formerly known as Levissi, had two churches and 14 chapels. Taksiyarhis and Katopanayi churches are in ruins. The wooden door of the second one is in Fethiye Museum. Panagia Pirgiotis Church (Lower church) is in good condition. This interesting church with its frescoes is worth visiting.

Before the population exchange, it was a very lively settlement with primary schools for boys and girls, doctors and pharmacies, a printing house and many shops. Even the newspaper was published.

Most of the Muslims who came with the exchange migrated to other places for various reasons. Those who went to Greece from here were also resettled somewhere near Athens. They prospered here and called it Nea Makri. In other words, they established the "New Meğri".

When you follow the stone-paved road and reach the chapel on the hill, you see Soğuksu Bay panoramically. Even though the weather is very hot, this place always gives a fresh breeze with a cool breeze. Kayaköy's breeze is not missing and there are no mosquitoes.

There are various eating and drinking facilities in the village. You can eat, drink something. Village women open pancakes on the dough board in front of their houses. Pancakes are made with brown flour, spinach, cheese, parsley and various herbs they collect from the environment, they are delicious and satisfying.

You can also enjoy a cool summer evening in the arbors under the hanging trees, in the self-catering restaurants.

You can reach Ölüdeniz by walking a side road that leads from the old village. The road is 5 km. and you are walking among the pines.
